UAE Astronomer Captures 'Giant Flames From Sun' As Strongest Solar Storm Hits Earth

An extraordinary celestial event recently unfolded, captivating astronomers and sky enthusiasts alike Mohammad Odeh, chairman of the International Astronomy Center (IAC) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), captured rare images of a “giant sunspot” that triggered the most powerful geomagnetic storm Earth has seen in two decades. Let’s delve into the fascinating details of this cosmic phenomenon.

The Giant Sunspot

The sunspot in question was a colossal cluster, spanning 17 times wider than Earth. Odeh used specialized telescopes at the IAC’s Astronomical Seal Observatory in Abu Dhabi to photograph this remarkable feature. In his first image, a giant sunspot dominates the solar surface, while the second picture reveals giant flames emanating from the sun.

The Solar Storm

From this massive sunspot, several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) emerged. These CMEs are bursts of solar wind and magnetic fields that propel charged particles into space. When these emissions reach Earth, they cause disturbances in our planet’s magnetic field, leading to the appearance of the aurora borealis (also known as the northern lights). Due to the intensity of these explosions and emissions, the aurora borealis was visible in areas that had not witnessed it for a long time.

The Flares

Over the course of two days, the sun exhibited four strong flares:

May 9, 1:00 PM (UAE time): The first flare was recorded.

May 9, 10:00 PM (UAE time): A second flare occurred.

Friday, 10:54 AM: The third flare erupted.

Saturday, 5:23 AM: The fourth and final flare blazed forth.

These solar flares unleashed powerful energy and set the stage for the subsequent geomagnetic storm. The first flare struck Earth at 8:00 PM GMT (12:00 AM UAE time) on Friday, initiating the awe-inspiring northern lights display. The second emission was expected to arrive on Saturday at 11:00 PM GMT, followed by a third emission on Sunday at 10:00 AM, and the fourth emission at 11:00 AM.

A Rare Spectacle

While the northern lights were not visible in the UAE, Odeh’s photographs of the sunspot and its fiery eruptions provide a glimpse into the sun’s dynamic behavior. These captivating images remind us of the immense forces at play in our solar system and the disconnectedness of Earth and space.

In summary, the UAE astronomer’s documentation of the giant flames from the sun during this solar storm serves as a testament to the wonders of astrophysics and the beauty of our cosmic neighborhood. As we continue to explore the universe, let us marvel at the celestial phenomena that unfold before our eyes.
